Lieksa
Lieksa is the nearest city with almost 14'000 inhabitants. Located at the eastern shore of lake Pielinen you find yourself in the middle of North Carelias nature and close to the russian border. Two third of Lieksa’s population lives in the city itself, right at the river Lieksanjoki where it flows into the lake.
Lieksa is famous for its nature. The 347 meter high Koli mountain is part of the area and is because of its spectacular view over the lake Pielinen one of Finlands most known countryside. The woods east of Lieksa have wonderful hiking trails and about 25 km north-east you find the rapids of Ruunaa, which are very nice for rafting. The 105 km² big national park Patvinsuo is located south-east from Lieksa.
Objects of interest in Lieksa are the open-air museum "Pielisen museo" and the modern church. The open-air museum shows 70 historical wooden houses with authentic furniture and you can learn about Lieksas history. At summertime Lieksa invites to a brass music festival, called the "Lieksan vaskiviikot".
